COLORSXSTUDIOS TAKES NYC: KOJEY RADICAL

The first-ever COLORSXSTUDIOS live event is sold out. At National Sawdust, the COLORSXSTUDIOS team prepares for their first foray into live performance. Outside, it’s an evening far too cold for early November in Brooklyn, but inside, the energy is warm and palpable. The performers and their teams filter in for soundcheck, everyone hugging and kissing upon arrival. Within minutes, it feels like we’re all at an eagerly-awaited family reunion. That the performers are quick to call COLORSXSTUDIOS family isn’t surprising.

The London-based grime rapper, who stars in the Netflix drama “Top Boy,” reflects on British slang, his sixth album, and how to get into the mind of a criminal.

Kano, the British rapper, ended a national tour last month with an unusual home-town performance: appearing at London’s Royal Albert Hall, an august venue better known for presenting classical music than for hosting grime artists.

Gracing these pages in many guises over the years, Kojey Radical’s initial titles ranged from model and visual artist to spoken word poet, and then: MOBO-nominated rapper, solidified by breakout release 23 Winters and his equally impressive follow-up In God’s Body.

Cashmere Tears, Kojey Radical’s latest project, is a glorious celebration of overcoming challenges—both inner and outer—and is the East London native’s biggest and most ambitious set so far.

When HYPEBEAST first spoke to Kojey Radical two years ago, the UK music scene was often viewed in reductivist terms. Every new artist was labelled as grime, regardless of what their actual sound was, despite the breadth and diversity of the region’s musical styles.

Nowadays, the vocabulary around UK music has broadened, but the problem remains the same.
