Atlantic Records is set to release the Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording)!

Hamilton is a musical biography of the first U.S. Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton, told by a nontraditional cast with hip-hop, rap and r&b musical stylings. To fully understand and appreciate the buzz around Hamilton you need to know the story behind its origin, development, and creator, Tony and Grammy Award-winning composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Born in Manhattan and raised in Inwood, Lin-Manuel went on to graduate from Wesleyan University where he co-founded hip hop improv comedy group Freestyle Love Supreme and wrote the first draft of a musical called In The Heights (cool fact: Lin-Manuel was awarded an honorary doctorate from Wesleyan University just this year!). In The Heights, starring Freestyle Love Supreme member Christopher Jackson and Lin-Manuel Miranda himself, went on to become an enormous success on Broadway and was nominated for an astounding 13 Tony Awards, winning 4 trophies for 'Best Musical', 'Best Original Score', 'Best Choreography' (Andy Blankenbuehler), and 'Best Orchestrations' (Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman – another Freestyle Love Supreme member). In the Heights also went on to win a Grammy Award for 'Best Musical Show Album' and won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist!

Hamilton was born on the heels of In The Heights' thrilling Broadway debut. Lin-Manuel got his hands on a copy of Ron Chernow's George Washington Book Prize winning biography, Alexander Hamilton, and was instantly inspired. Miranda saw Hamilton as a bold, outspoken, passionate leader and revolutionary. Hamilton's rise from humble beginnings to a position of power as Treasury Secretary mirrored the rags-to-riches stories of many popular hip hop artists – and rap and hip-hop, something Lin-Manuel knew and loved, provided the perfect voice for Hamilton's story.

Fast forward to 2009. Lin-Manuel Miranda is invited to perform a song from the "Hamilton Mixtape", a concept album that would eventually develop into Hamilton the musical, for President Obama at the White House Poetry Jam. Check it out!

Keeping close to history, Miranda wrote some of Hamilton at the Morris-Jumel Mansion where George Washington's first cabinet met. He also brought on Ron Chernow, author of the biography that inspired him, to be his historical consultant.

As Hamilton developed, Lin-Manuel reunited with the In The Heights creative team, including director, Thomas Kail, musical director and orchestrator, Alex Lacamoire (featured in the video above), and choreographer, Andy Blankenbuehler. In 2013, Lin-Manuel workshopped the show, still titled "Hamilton Mixtape", at Vassar College, and two years later, a highly anticipated production of Hamilton finally debuted Off-Broadway at the Public Theater. The creative team continued to refine the production throughout it's sold out Off-Broadway run before finally opening the Broadway production of Hamilton at the Richard Rogers Theatre for previews on July 13th, 2015.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Hamilton have been profiled by numerous publications including The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Vogue, and Forbes. The New Yorker called Hamilton, "an achievement of historical and cultural reimagining." First Lady, Michelle Obama, and numerous celebrities and critics attended and praised the Off-Broadway production of Hamilton at the Public Theater, and President Obama himself attended a preview of the Broadway production just last week!

The excitement and anticipation ahead of Hamilton's official Broadway opening on August 6th is palpable. Hundreds upon hundreds of enthusiastic ticket buyers flood the Richard Rogers Theatre each day in hopes of scoring a ticket to one of Hamilton's preview performances.

Buzz around the musical only increased with the news that Atlantic Records would be releasing the Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording). Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted the announcement himself:

The Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording) will be executive produced by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, founding members of the Grammy Award winning hip-hop band, The Roots (also featured on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon). Slightly dubious about a hip-hop musical at first, Questlove raves "Ten minutes into 'Hamilton'... I was just stunned. It was such a sucker punch." Tariq Trotter suggests, for those who are new to rap and hip-hop, that Hamilton "can be your introduction to hip-hop – on Broaday. And it's a valid one. It's a credible one."

The Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording) on Atlantic Records will be available for pre-order on August 7th following Hamilton's Broadway opening!
